Welcome to the 2024–25 concert series of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, marking our twelfth season of annual concert offerings! We are thrilled to present an extraordinary lineup of performances celebrating the diversity and richness of sacred music.

Unclouded Day: Sacred Songs of America

Experience the rich heritage of American sacred music through stunning choral arrangements of beloved folk hymns such as “How Can I Keep from Singing?”, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” and “This Little Light of Mine.” While many of these beloved songs were composed and popularized in the 19th century, they have been revitalized in recent years with spectacular settings for exceptional vocal ensembles by some of America’s finest composers.

Handel’s Messiah

Of Heaven and Earth

The Fifth Avenue Chamber Choir, directed by Ryan Jackson
For their second recording project, the Fifth Avenue Choir offers a program of a cappella music evoking heaven and earth. Featuring Aaron Copland’s vivid setting of the creation story, In the Beginning, alongside Frank Martin’s ethereal Mass for Double Choir, the program also includes stunning recent works by American composer Caroline Shaw and Canadian composer Timothy Corlis. Following this special concert presentation, the choir will embark on an intensive weeklong recording process with celebrated producer Adrian Peacock and recording engineer David Hinitt.

The Brahms Requiem

The Fifth Avenue Chamber Choir, directed by Ryan Jackson
with the Shelest Piano Duo

Experience the majestic scope of Brahms’s German Requiem with the intimacy of chamber music. In the composer’s own reduction of the orchestral accompaniment for piano duet, the work’s hand-picked biblical texts come to life, and its stunning choral textures take center stage. Critically acclaimed concert pianists Anna and Dmitri Shelest join the twenty-four professional voices of the Fifth Avenue Chamber Choir to create the rich, Romantic sound of this year’s Lenten concert.
